“Venetian nobles were merchants and adventurers, who risked their riches and sometimes their own lives on their ships. They created a city, which offered a strong sense of adventure. During this time, the Venetian mask was born. The masks represented absence of rules and freedom of action. City residents could do anything with the anonymity of a mask, which broke the traditional boundaries and thus, masks entered the realm of everyday life in Venice.”
